- What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
- The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
- Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. - There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death. - And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
- Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.
- Before a downfall the heart is haughty,
but humility comes before honor. - I, even I, am he who comforts you.
Who are you that you fear mere mortals,
human beings who are but grass. - A person’s riches may ransom their life,
but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes. - The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me? - It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in humans. - A person finds joy in giving an apt reply—
and how good is a timely word! - Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands. - He who finds a wife finds what is good
and receives favor from the Lord. - For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
- How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.
- A person may think their own ways are right,
but the Lord weighs the heart. - The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
- It is to one’s honor to avoid strife,
but every fool is quick to quarrel. - Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice. - So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?” - However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
- The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. - And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
- Blessed is the one whom God corrects;
so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
