Bible Verses about Suffering

  • In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.
  • We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.
  • All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
  • Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.
  • The righteous person faces many troubles,
but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.
  • For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!
  • Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?
  • So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.
  • But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats.
  • For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him.
  • Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.
  • He was despised and rejected—
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
He was despised, and we did not care.
  • If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.
  • Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
  • I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death.
  • For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.
  • For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.
  • Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship.
    He said,
“I came naked from my mother’s womb,
and I will be naked when I leave.
The Lord gave me what I had,
and the Lord has taken it away.
Praise the name of the Lord!”
  • If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
  • Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
  • They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”
  • If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
  • But consider the joy of those corrected by God!
Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin.
  • And he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side. The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’
  • But God has protected me right up to this present time so I can testify to everyone, from the least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would happen— that the Messiah would suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, and in this way announce God’s light to Jews and Gentiles alike.

You have tested us, O God;
you have purified us like silver.
