Enjoy prosperity while you can, but when hard times strike, realize that both come from God. If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. | If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembly. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. | Rejoicing in hope, enduring in troubles, continuing steadfastly in prayer. |
Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. | For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. |
Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. | Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad. |
One should be kind to a fainting friend, but you accuse me without any fear of the Almighty. | To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty. |
When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. | In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul. |
The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. | It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. |
I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. | That their hearts may be comforted, they being knit together in love, and gaining all riches of the full assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ. |
