You and I are Jews by birth, not ‘sinners’ like the Gentiles. Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law. | We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law. |
I will hurry, without delay, to obey your commands. | I hurry and do not delay to keep your commandments. |
We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty; but even though he is just and righteous, he does not destroy us. | The Almighty —we cannot find him; he is great in power and justice, and abundant righteousness he will not violate. |
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. | For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. |
What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. | Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. |
Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.” | Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.” |
“Listen to me and make up your minds to honor my name,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “or I will bring a terrible curse against you. I will curse even the blessings you receive. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you have not taken my warning to heart.” | If you will not listen, if you will not lay it to heart to give glory to my name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send the curse on you and I will curse your blessings; indeed I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart. |
God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. | Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. |
This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. | In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. |
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you. | And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. |
“Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?” says the Lord. | Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord. |
For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him. | For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well. |
Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come. | Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. |
For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful. If you return to him, he will not continue to turn his face from you. | For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if you return to him. |
This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. | This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts. |
You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. | You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. |
God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor— not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. | For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from fornication; that each one of you know how to control your own body in holiness and honor, not with lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God. |
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. | Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. |
Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham. | Now a mediator involves more than one party; but God is one. |
I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman. | I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look upon a virgin? |
But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” | But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” |
I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food. | I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured in my bosom the words of his mouth. |
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” | For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. |
“Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” | Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want. |
Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward. | Be on your guard, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward. |
