He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” | He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” |
Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ | Cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ |
|
Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. | Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. |
Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. | Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. |
What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” | What then should we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” |
Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. | Hear, my child, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. |
You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. | You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. |
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. | For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. |
You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. | But as for you, teach what is consistent with sound doctrine. |
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” | Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.” |
I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’ | I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ |
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. | “All things are lawful,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. |
From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” | From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” |
You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed. | You may say to yourself, “How can we recognize a word that the Lord has not spoken?” If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be frightened by it. |
For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. | For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.” |
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” | Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” |
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.” | Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” |
My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart. | My child, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. |
Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. | Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. |
But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. | But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. |
Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me. | Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. |
So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. | So, if they say to you, ‘Look! He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look! He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. |
It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one’s vows. | It is a snare for one to say rashly, “It is holy,” and begin to reflect only after making a vow. |
We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. | For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. |
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. | You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. |
