But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. | But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. | No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. |
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe. | Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety. |
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. | You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. | Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. |
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. | Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. |
The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. | The Lord makes some poor and others rich; he brings some down and lifts others up. |

One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. | We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord. |
The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool. | Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool. |
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. | Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law. |
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. | All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. |
