| Do not pride yourself on your own wisdom; fear the Lord and turn your back on evil. | But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that the fact that you are fasting will not be obvious to others but only to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees everything that is done in secret will reward you. | But as for you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that your fasting will not be noticed by people but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. |
| Commit your way to the Lord; place your trust in him, and he will act. | And whenever you stand in prayer, forgive whatever grievance you have against anybody, so that your Father in heaven may forgive your wrongs too. | And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you for your offenses. |
| Be strong and courageous in your hearts, all you who place your hope in the Lord. | Be strong and let your heart take courage, All you who wait for the Lord. |
