Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance. | And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a sacrificial offering whose fragrance is pleasing to God. |
By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his only born Son into the world that we might live through him. | God’s love was revealed to us in this way: God sent his only-begotten Son into the world so that we might have life through him. |
The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. | And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. And we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth. |
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. | This is what love is: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. |
Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth’s sake. | Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory because of your kindness and faithfulness. |
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. | For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may attain eternal life. |
Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to David’s city, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant. | Joseph therefore went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David. He went to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was expecting a child. |
By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. | This is how we know what love is: he laid down his life for us, and we in turn must be prepared to lay down our lives for our brethren. |
He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things? | He did not spare his own Son but gave him up for all of us. How then can he fail also to give us everything else along with him? |
He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only born Son of God. | Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe in him already stands condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. |
For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory. | Our temporary light afflictions are preparing for us an incomparable weight of eternal glory. |
Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. | Before the mountains were brought forth or the earth and the world came into existence, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. |
Who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before times eternal. | God saved us and called us to a life of holiness, not because of our works but according to his own purpose and the grace that has been bestowed upon us in Christ Jesus from all eternity. |
You shall consider in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so Yahweh your God disciplines you. | Thus you could understand that the Lord, your God, was disciplining you, just like a father disciplines his son. |
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. | The birth of Jesus Christ occurred in this way. My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine. | My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad. |
Yahweh commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Yahweh our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are today. | The Lord commanded us to observe all of these statutes and to fear the Lord, our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, even as we are today. |
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. | For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer. However, the face of the Lord is set against those who do evil. |
Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us. | Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that weighs us down and the sins that so easily distract us and with perseverance run the race that lies ahead of us. |
Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you didn’t make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God. | Yet even so, because of your great compassion, you did not completely destroy them, nor did you forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God. |
Yahweh your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you if you return to him. | For the Lord, your God, is gracious and compassionate, and he will not turn his face away from you if you return to him. |
What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? | What then can we say in response to all this? If God is for us, who can be against us? |
