| Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good. | Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol. They decorate it with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won’t fall over. Their gods are like helpless scarecrows in a cucumber field! They cannot speak, and they need to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of such gods, for they can neither harm you nor do you any good. |
| The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way. | The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. |
| Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. | Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. |
| Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord! | So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord! |
| But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. | But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. |
| You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! | You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. |
| To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | He called you to salvation when we told you the Good News; now you can share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
| Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! | Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord. |
| Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! | Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased. |

| God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? | God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? |
| For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? | And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? |
