| We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. | And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. |
| But whoever has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, then closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him? | If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? |
