If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything.Sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what good is wealth—except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers!As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them?
Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless—like chasing the wind.And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened.A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes.
You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.
