For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. | Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. |
Now John wore clothing of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. | Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. |

I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. | I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full. |
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. | Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full. |
No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. | No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us. |
But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction. | But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction. |
Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. | But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. |
Many shall be purified, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked shall continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand. | Many will purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined, but the wicked will do wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand. |
And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. | The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. |
Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. | Who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross. |
Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand. | Who are you who judge another’s servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand. |
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. | But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ. |
Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. | Sing to Yahweh, for he has done excellent things! Let this be known in all the earth! |
Like a city breached, without walls, is one who lacks self-control. | Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint. |
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. | For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily, and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power. |
This also comes from the Lord of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom. | This also comes out from Yahweh of Armies, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom. |
Because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. | For no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit. |
God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, and makes me tread upon the heights. | Yahweh, the Lord, is my strength. He makes my feet like deer’s feet, and enables me to go in high places. |
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. | There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. |
Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the orphan who had no helper. The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. | Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had no one to help him, the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. |
We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law. | We, being Jews by nature and not Gentile sinners, yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law. |
Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. | Let’s hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful. |
For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. | Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. |
This means understanding that the law is laid down not for the innocent but for the lawless and disobedient, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers, fornicators, sodomites, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. | As knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine, according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. |
You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. | You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. |
