| There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. | Some friends play at friendship but a true friend sticks closer than one's nearest kin. |
| Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses. | Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. |
| Evil people get rich for the moment, but the reward of the godly will last. | The wicked earn no real gain, but those who sow righteousness get a true reward. |
| True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life. | The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. |
| Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. | Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good. |
| And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their fellow believers. | The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. |
| A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ | And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ |
