Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners. | But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. |
Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord. | Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord. |

I had eaten no rich food, no meat or wine had entered my mouth, and I had not anointed myself at all, for the full three weeks. | I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. |
I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. | I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. |
I can do all things through him who strengthens me. | I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. |
I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. | I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. |
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. | And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. |
But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. | But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me. |
For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. | For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. |
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me. | Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. |
I delight in the way of your decrees as much as in all riches. | I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. |
When I thought, “My foot is slipping,” your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up. | When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up. |
For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. | For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. |
One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. | One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. |
Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. | Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. |
Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. | Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. |
You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. | Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. |
I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah | I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah. |
I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world! | These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. |
I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance. | I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. |
You shall be holy to me; for I the Lord am holy, and I have separated you from the other peoples to be mine. | And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine. |
With the Lord on my side I do not fear. What can mortals do to me? | The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? |
But I do not count my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God's grace. | But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. |
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. | This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. |
You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. | Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. |
