A fool’s lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings. | Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating. |
In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty. | Work brings profit, but mere talk leads to poverty! |
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad. | Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. |

Excellent speech isn’t fitting for a fool, much less do lying lips fit a prince. | Eloquent words are not fitting for a fool; even less are lies fitting for a ruler. |
The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver. The heart of the wicked is of little worth. | The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless. |
Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy. | Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice. |
By Yahweh’s word, the heavens were made: all their army by the breath of his mouth. | The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. |
When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. | When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. |
