A perverse person spreads strife, And a slanderer separates close friends. | A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. |
One who walks with integrity, practices righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. He does not slander with his tongue, Nor do evil to his neighbor, Nor bring shame on his friend. | He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. |
One who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets, But one who is trustworthy conceals a matter. | A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. |

One who conceals hatred has lying lips, And one who spreads slander is a fool. | He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool. |

A soothing tongue is a tree of life, But perversion in it crushes the spirit. | A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. |
The words of a gossiper are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body. | The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. |
