The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree— all the trees of the field—are dried up. Surely the people’s joy is withered away. | The vine has dried up, And the fig tree has withered; The pomegranate tree, The palm tree also, And the apple tree— All the trees of the field are withered; Surely joy has withered away from the sons of men. |
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. | You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! |
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. | Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. |
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. | For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. |
For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. | For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. |
“Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) | So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?” |
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” | But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” |
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. | Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. |
One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” | Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” But He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?” And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” |
Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. | As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. |
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you— I whom you have delivered. | My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You, And my soul, which You have redeemed. |
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus. | For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus. |
And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. | And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. |
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. | By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. | So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. |
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. | And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. |
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. | Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. |
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. | For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. |
And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. | And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. |
And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. | And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. |
The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. | Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. |
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. | Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. |
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. | Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. |
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. | Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth. |
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. | For in much wisdom is much grief, And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. |
