| For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.” | For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. He must turn away from evil and do good; He must seek peace and pursue it.” |
| And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? | For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world, but forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul? |
| My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice! | My son, if your heart is wise, My own heart also will be glad. |
| If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. | If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. |
| Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? | And who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? |
| One should be kind to a fainting friend, but you accuse me without any fear of the Almighty. | For the despairing man there should be kindness from his friend; So that he does not abandon the fear of the Almighty. |
| If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. | Now if your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have gained your brother. |
| Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool. | One who conceals hatred has lying lips, And one who spreads slander is a fool. |
| God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. | Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. |
| Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” | Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” |
| Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again? | What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? |
| Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives. Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin. Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. | You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may certainly rebuke your neighbor, but you are not to incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance, nor hold any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord. |
| Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. | Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not to have quarrels over opinions. |
| I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. | Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. |
| But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. | But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. |
| If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. | And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, he is to be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. |
| The Lord will stay with you as long as you stay with him! Whenever you seek him, you will find him. But if you abandon him, he will abandon you. | The Lord is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you abandon Him, He will abandon you. |
| But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently. | But if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it. |
| This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him. | The statement is trustworthy: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him. |
| What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? | What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? |
| Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” | Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” |
| But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. | But if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive your offenses. |
| If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. | For if you forgive other people for their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. |
| So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. | In the same way, faith also, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. |
| Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them. | Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in your power to do it. |
