Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” | When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” |
When you become aware of your guilt in any of these ways, you must confess your sin. | And it shall be, when he is guilty in any of these matters, that he shall confess that he has sinned in that thing. |

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. | Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. |
You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. | Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. |
John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” | He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” |
But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” | But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” |
You must diligently obey the commands of the Lord your God—all the laws and decrees he has given you. | You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, His testimonies, and His statutes which He has commanded you. |
A newly married man must not be drafted into the army or be given any other official responsibilities. He must be free to spend one year at home, bringing happiness to the wife he has married. | When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war or be charged with any business; he shall be free at home one year, and bring happiness to his wife whom he has taken. |
Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me. | You shall not make anything to be with Me—gods of silver or gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves. |
To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction. | Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid. |
Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol. They decorate it with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won’t fall over. Their gods are like helpless scarecrows in a cucumber field! They cannot speak, and they need to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of such gods, for they can neither harm you nor do you any good. | For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple. They are upright, like a palm tree, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good. |
Slaves must always obey their masters and do their best to please them. They must not talk back or steal, but must show themselves to be entirely trustworthy and good. Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way. | Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. |
So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. | Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. |
You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor. | You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s. |
And do everything with love. | Let all that you do be done with love. |
Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him. | You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him. |
But God has protected me right up to this present time so I can testify to everyone, from the least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would happen— that the Messiah would suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, and in this way announce God’s light to Jews and Gentiles alike. | Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come— that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles. |
You must keep my Sabbath days of rest and show reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord. | You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the Lord. |
But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently. | But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. |
And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. | But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. |
You must faithfully keep all my commands by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord. | Therefore you shall keep My commandments, and perform them: I am the Lord. |

I have given them to you for food, just as I have given you grain and vegetables. But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it. | Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. |
I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear? | I, even I, am He who comforts you. Who are you that you should be afraid Of a man who will die, And of the son of a man who will be made like grass? |
Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” | Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ |
