Bible Verses about 'Self control'

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.Like a city breached, without walls, is one who lacks self-control.
Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city. One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and one whose temper is controlled than one who captures a city.
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.
In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love.
Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control.Do not deprive one another except perhaps by agreement for a set time, to devote yourselves to prayer, and then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed.
All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one.
Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle.
So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness.Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but one who has a hasty temper exalts folly.
That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.And those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything. Those who guard their mouths preserve their lives; those who open wide their lips come to ruin.
God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor— not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from fornication; that each one of you know how to control your own body in holiness and honor, not with lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God.
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.
Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator.
And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil.
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.
I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. But I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.
Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.A fool gives full vent to anger, but the wise quietly holds it back.
The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers.
And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.Also that the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, but with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God.
My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.And it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin.
For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God.For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly.

Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair, and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing; rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God's sight.
