You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. | You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am. |
As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person. | Like water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man. |
|
As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. | As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. |
So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. | So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. |
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. | So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. |
So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer. | So we fasted and begged our God for this, and he granted our request. |
As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. | Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance. |
So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. | Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself. |
Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life. | For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. |
So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” | So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?” |
Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” | Jesus therefore said to them again, “Peace be to you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” |
Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. | Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another. |
He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. | As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. |
The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. | Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. |
And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! | Out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. |
So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | That as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. |
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. | For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. |
We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him. | We are his witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him. |
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. | For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. |
So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. | So then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. |
Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. | Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. |
Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live! Then the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will be your helper, just as you have claimed. | Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be with you, as you say. |
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. | Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us. |
The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. | For as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. |
So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. | If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. |
