| Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything. | Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. |
| But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth. | The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. |
| Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. | Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. |
| Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent. | Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent. |
| The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. | A rich man's wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination. |
| And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. | She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. |
| Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. | Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. |
| Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did? | Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? |
| They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them. | For not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. |

| They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires. These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them. | They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. |
| Others were given in exchange for you. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. | Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. |
| I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. | Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. |
