He who loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver, nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.
Then I saw all the labor and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the ax. They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move. They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but he who gathers by hand makes it grow.Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.
Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself.Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me.Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me.
