| But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that the fact that you are fasting will not be obvious to others but only to your Father who is hidden. | And if one should fall, his companion will help him up. How pathetic is the man who is alone and falls and has no one to assist him to his feet. | For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up! |
| You need to be steadfast if you want to do the will of God and receive what he has promised. | For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. |

| A man is joyful when he utters apt answers, and even more satisfying is a word in season. | A person has joy in an apt answer, And how delightful is a timely word! |
| Then, after completing their fasting and prayer, they laid their hands on them and sent them off. | Then, when they had fasted, prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. |
| Whenever you fast, do not assume a gloomy expression like the hypocrites who contort their faces so that others may realize that they are fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. | Now whenever you fast, do not make a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they distort their faces so that they will be noticed by people when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. |
| Wealth hastily acquired will dwindle away, but when amassed little by little, it will increase. | Wealth obtained from nothing dwindles, But one who gathers by labor increases it. |
| And when he had been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. | And having been perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him. |
