| And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? | For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? |
| This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. | This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. |

| For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. | Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God. | For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. |

| But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. | But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. |
| For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! | For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. |
| And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. | And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. |
| He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. | And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. |
