Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol. They decorate it with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won’t fall over. Their gods are like helpless scarecrows in a cucumber field! They cannot speak, and they need to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of such gods, for they can neither harm you nor do you any good. | For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple. They are upright, like a palm tree, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good. |

Are you not of more value than they? |
All the believers were united in heart and mind. God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. | Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. |
When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. | And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. |
Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever. | Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever! |
God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. | Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. |
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. | Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. |
