Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.It shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. Whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant.
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”He sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, “If any man wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.
Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there my servant will also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us, not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death.
