All those who keep his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And the proof that he abides in us is the Spirit that he has given us. | Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us. |
Whatever you ask in my name I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. | You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. |

When I am terrified, I place my trust in you. | But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. |
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only delights in expressing his own opinions. | Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions. |
O Lord, you grant peace to those who are steadfast because of their trust in you. | You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! |
In God, whose word I praise, in God I place my trust and know no fear; what can people do to me? | I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me? |
Do not be lacking in zeal, but serve the Lord with spiritual fervor. | Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. |
The Lord is good, an unfailing refuge in a time of distress. He takes care of those who place their trust in him. | The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. |
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the company of scoffers. | Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. |
If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you may ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. | But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! |
In the netherworld, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham, far off, and Lazarus by his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’ | And he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side. The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’ |
As for you, my child, take strength from the grace that is in Christ Jesus. | Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. |
Why do you take note of the splinter in your brother’s eye but do not notice the wooden plank in your own eye? | And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? |
In you, O Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me. | O Lord, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. |
God created mankind in his image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them. | So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. |
No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is made complete in us. | No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. |
I wait for the Lord in anxious expectation; I place my hope in his word. | I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word. |
In peace I lie down and sleep, for only with your help, O Lord, can I rest secure. | In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. |
Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. | Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to you for refuge. |
Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops. | Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear! |
It is better to spend one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in God’s house than dwell inside the tents of the wicked. | A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked. |
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst. | For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them. |
Our God is in heaven; he does whatever he pleases. | Our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes. |
God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth. | For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth. |
Because in my eyes you are precious, because you are honored and I love you, I will give people in exchange for you and nations in return for your life. | Others were given in exchange for you. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. |
