My child, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. | My son, if your heart is wise, My own heart also will be glad. |
Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless, indeed, you fail to meet the test! | Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test? |
Tell slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to talk back, not to pilfer, but to show complete and perfect fidelity, so that in everything they may be an ornament to the doctrine of God our Savior. | Urge slaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be pleasing, not argumentative, not stealing, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. |
The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps. | The mind of a person plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. |
You shall be holy to me; for I the Lord am holy, and I have separated you from the other peoples to be mine. | So you are to be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy; and I have singled you out from the peoples to be Mine. |
But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. | But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. |
Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. | For one will hardly die for a righteous person; though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. |
For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? | For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world, but forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul? |
If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. | If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this person’s religion is worthless. |
Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband. | Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband. |
Like a city breached, without walls, is one who lacks self-control. | Like a city that is broken into and without walls So is a person who has no self-control over his spirit. |
He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. | And He Himself brought our sins in His body up on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by His wounds you were healed. |
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. | The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the treacherous will destroy them. |
So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God's rest also cease from their labors as God did from his. | Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. |
Those who guard their mouths preserve their lives; those who open wide their lips come to ruin. | One who guards his mouth protects his life; One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. |
Because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind and to things that should not be done. | For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations with women and burned in their desire toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper. |
Therefore you are great, O Lord God; for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | For this reason You are great, Lord God; for there is no one like You, and there is no God except You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. |

Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” | But He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.” |
Those who keep the commandment will live; those who are heedless of their ways will die. | One who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But one who is careless of conduct will die. |
