Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? | Who indeed conquers the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? |
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. | For from the beginning you have heard the message that we should love one another. |
And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. | This is the commandment we have received from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. |
Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. | This is how we can be certain that we abide in him and that he abides in us: he has given us a share in his Spirit. |
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. | And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. |
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. | Whatever you ask in my name I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. |
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? | Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you have faith you will see the glory of God?” |
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. | I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. |
Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. | Jesus then said, “I will remain with you only for a short time longer, and then I shall return to him who sent me.” |
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. | So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. |
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. | And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever. |
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. | And the world with all its enticements is passing away, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. |
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. | Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” |
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. | I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be saved. He will go in and out and will find pasture. |
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | Until now, in my name, you have not asked for anything. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. |
