Dear children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. | Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. |

This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples: if you love one another. | Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. |
Jesus replied, “This is the work of God: to believe in the one whom he has sent.” | Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” |
By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. | When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. |
And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. | And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. |
“Peace be with you,” Jesus said to them again. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” | Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” |
Through him all things came into existence, and without him there was nothing. That which came to be. | God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. |
For from the beginning you have heard the message that we should love one another. | This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. |
Who indeed conquers the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? | And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. |
Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you have faith you will see the glory of God?” | Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” |
God abides in anyone who acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, and that person abides in God. | All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. |
Whatever you ask in my name I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. | You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. |
Whoever possesses the Son possesses life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not possess life. | Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. |
And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. | And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. |
I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. | I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! |
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever. | And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. |
This is the commandment we have received from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. | And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their fellow believers. |
This is how we can be certain that we abide in him and that he abides in us: he has given us a share in his Spirit. | And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. |
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. | And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. |
If you know me, then you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him. You have seen him. | If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him! |
Jesus then said, “I will remain with you only for a short time longer, and then I shall return to him who sent me.” | But Jesus told them, “I will be with you only a little longer. Then I will return to the one who sent me.” |
I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I do ask you to protect them from the evil one. | I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. |
Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” | Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” |
And eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent, Jesus Christ. | And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. |
