Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. | Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
The rich rule over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender. | The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. |

Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. | Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. |
Yahweh makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up. | The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. |
Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy. | Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. |
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats. | A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes. |

This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. | This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. |
As sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing and yet possessing all things. | Sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. |
Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” | Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” |
If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing. | If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. |
Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had no one to help him, the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. | Because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them. The one who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing. |
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed. | The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free. |
Thus has Yahweh of Armies spoken, saying, ‘Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother. Don’t oppress the widow, the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.’ | This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’ |
The Lord Yahweh’s Spirit is on me, because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound. | The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. |
He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.” | John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” |
Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. | Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. |
