All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. | And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. |
A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted. | A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame. |
An honest witness does not lie; a false witness breathes lies. | A faithful witness does not lie, But a false witness will utter lies. |

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. | A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. |
For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. | For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps. |
And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. | But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. |
Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. | Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God. |
But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers. | But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |
So, what about eating meat that has been offered to idols? Well, we all know that an idol is not really a god and that there is only one God. | Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. |
Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham. | Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. |
Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! | Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness. |
God detests the prayers of a person who ignores the law. | One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer is an abomination. |
When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong. | Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. |
Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. | Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. |
For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! | For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. |
Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. | Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving. |

The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth. | Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal truthfully are His delight. |
