| But “he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.” For it isn’t he who commends himself who is approved, but whom the Lord commends. | As the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.” When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. |

| While we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. | So then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. | So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. |
| Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust in the name of Yahweh our God. | Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God. |
| A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion. | Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions. |
| For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. | For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! |
| Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. | To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction. |

| My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth. | Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. |
| But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. | But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. |
| He who walks blamelessly walks surely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out. | People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed. |
| A fool despises his father’s correction, but he who heeds reproof shows prudence. | Only a fool despises a parent’s discipline; whoever learns from correction is wise. |
| What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! | Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! |
| Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established. | Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success. |
