He was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?” He said to them, “Did you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry—he, and those who were with him? How he entered into God’s house at the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?” He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” | One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” |
Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner repenting. | Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. |
But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. | But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. |
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. | Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. |
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! | What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! |
When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment. | And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. |
As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh’s word is tried. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him. | This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. |
As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh’s word is tested. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him. | This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. |
Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! | Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! |
For you need endurance so that, having done the will of God, you may receive the promise. | For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. |
So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. | So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. |
For sin will not have dominion over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. | For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. |
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. | Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. |
But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. | But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. |
But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. | These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. |
Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. | Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. |
For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished. | For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. |
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. | Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. |
You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace. | You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. |
Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. | Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. |
Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction. He opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God. | Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. |
But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I will come out like gold. My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way, and not turned away. | But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold. My foot has held fast to his steps; I have kept his way and have not turned aside. |
For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” | For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” |
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. | For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. |
