Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. | But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. |
For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. | You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. |

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. | So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. |
And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? | Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? |
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. | But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. |
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. | If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. |
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. | Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. |
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. | A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. |
And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you. | Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. |
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. | For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. |
Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? | Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? |
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. | I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. |
And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house. | You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. |
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. | Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” |
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. | So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. |
That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed. | So that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed. |
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. | For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. |
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. | I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. |
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. | I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. |
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. | And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever. |
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. | My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? |
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. | You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. |
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. | Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” |
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. | For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. |
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. | You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. |
