If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. | If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. |
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. | I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. |
|
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. | My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. |
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. | Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. |
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. | You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. |
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. | If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. |
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. | When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. |
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. | But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. |
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. | When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. |
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. |
I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. | I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father. |
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. | I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. |
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. | Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. |
I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. | My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. |
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. | Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. |
And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. | I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them. |
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. | When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. |
Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. | Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) |
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. | Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” |
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. | Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” |
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. | Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” |
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. | In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. |
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. | Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. |
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. | The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. |
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. | Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. |
