| It is the will of God that you should lead a life of sanctity. You must refrain from sexual immorality. Each of you must learn to acquire a wife from pure and honorable motives, not to gratify passion like the Gentiles who do not know God. | For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God. |
| Brethren, if anyone is detected committing a transgression, you who are spiritual must set him right in a spirit of gentleness. Meanwhile, you should take care so that you yourselves are not tempted. | Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well. |
| In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself. | So husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. |

| The brother who is in modest circumstances should take pride in being raised up. | In the same way, even the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs that cannot be put into words. | Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. |
| I also ask that the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing. They should be adorned not with braided hair or with gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good works, as is fitting for women who profess their reverence for God. | Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive apparel, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. |
| So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. | So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. |
| I understand that man’s greatest happiness is to be glad and do well throughout his life. And when we eat and drink and find satisfaction in all our labors, this is a gift of God. | I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime; moreover, that every person who eats and drinks sees good in all his labor—this is the gift of God. |
| Everything that you do should be done in love. | All that you do must be done in love. |
| For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may attain eternal life. | For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. |
| Each of us must consider his neighbor’s good for the purpose of building him up. | Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification. |
| When I realized that my foot was slipping, your kindness, O Lord, raised me up. | If I should say, “My foot has slipped,” Your faithfulness, Lord, will support me. |
| Beloved, since God loved us so much, we should love one another. | Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. |
| What then shall we say? Should we persist in sin in order that grace may abound? Of course not! We have died to sin. How can we live in it any longer? | What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Far from it! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? |
| Remember this, my beloved brethren: everyone should be quick to listen but slow to speak and slow to anger. | You know this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Now everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. |
| Even if an army encamps against me, my heart will not succumb to fear; even if war breaks out against me, I will not have my trust shaken. | If an army encamps against me, My heart will not fear; If war arises against me, In spite of this I am confident. |
| By his own choice he gave us birth through the way of truth so that we may be a kind of firstfruits of all his creation. | In the exercise of His will He gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures. |
| Instruct those who are rich in this world’s goods that they should not be proud, nor should they trust in the uncertainty of riches but rather in God who richly provides us with everything we need for our enjoyment. | Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. |
| Finally, all of you should be united in spirit, sympathetic, filled with love for one another, compassionate, and humble. | To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, loving, compassionate, and humble. |
| If someone among you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without finding fault, and it will be given to him. | But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. |
| What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? | What is man that You think of him, And a son of man that You are concerned about him? |
| Do not seek to adorn yourself externally—by the braiding of your hair and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothing. Rather, let your adornment be of your inner self, the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. | Your adornment must not be merely the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on apparel; but it should be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. |
