| It is the will of God that you should lead a life of sanctity. You must refrain from sexual immorality. Each of you must learn to acquire a wife from pure and honorable motives, not to gratify passion like the Gentiles who do not know God. | For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God. |
| Brethren, if anyone is detected committing a transgression, you who are spiritual must set him right in a spirit of gentleness. Meanwhile, you should take care so that you yourselves are not tempted. | Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted. |
| In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself. | Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. |

| The brother who is in modest circumstances should take pride in being raised up. Likewise, the one who is rich should glory in being brought low, for he will disappear like a flower of the field. | Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. |
| In the same way, even the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs that cannot be put into words. | In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. |
| I also ask that the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing. They should be adorned not with braided hair or with gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good works, as is fitting for women who profess their reverence for God. | In the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety, not with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing, but with good works, which is appropriate for women professing godliness. |
| So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. | If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. |
| I understand that man’s greatest happiness is to be glad and do well throughout his life. And when we eat and drink and find satisfaction in all our labors, this is a gift of God. | I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice, and to do good as long as they live. Also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God. |
| Everything that you do should be done in love. | Let all that you do be done in love. |
| For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may attain eternal life. | For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. |
| Each of us must consider his neighbor’s good for the purpose of building him up. | Let each one of us please his neighbor for that which is good, to be building him up. |
| When I realized that my foot was slipping, your kindness, O Lord, raised me up. | When I said, “My foot is slipping!” Your loving kindness, Yahweh, held me up. |
| Beloved, since God loved us so much, we should love one another. | Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another. |
| What then shall we say? Should we persist in sin in order that grace may abound? Of course not! We have died to sin. How can we live in it any longer? | What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer? |
| Remember this, my beloved brethren: everyone should be quick to listen but slow to speak and slow to anger. | So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. |
| Even if an army encamps against me, my heart will not succumb to fear; even if war breaks out against me, I will not have my trust shaken. | Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident. |
| By his own choice he gave us birth through the way of truth so that we may be a kind of firstfruits of all his creation. | Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. |
| Instruct those who are rich in this world’s goods that they should not be proud, nor should they trust in the uncertainty of riches but rather in God who richly provides us with everything we need for our enjoyment. | Charge those who are rich in this present age that they not be arrogant, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. |
| Finally, all of you should be united in spirit, sympathetic, filled with love for one another, compassionate, and humble. | Finally, all of you be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous. |
| If someone among you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without finding fault, and it will be given to him. | But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. |
| What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? | What is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him? |
| Do not seek to adorn yourself externally—by the braiding of your hair and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothing. Rather, let your adornment be of your inner self, the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. | Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing, but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight. |
