No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. | Now no one lights a lamp and covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see the light. |
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. | Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. |

Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. | So, having obtained help from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, stating nothing but what the Prophets and Moses said was going to take place, as to whether the Christ was to suffer, and whether, as first from the resurrection of the dead, He would proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles. |
Therefore I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. | But as for me, I will be on the watch for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. |
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. | You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. |
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. | Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. |
O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. | Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I get up; You understand my thought from far away. |
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? | My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God? |
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. | Watch the path of your feet, And all your ways will be established. |
He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. | He alone is my rock and my salvation, My refuge; I will not be shaken. |
Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. | You shall keep My Sabbaths and revere My sanctuary; I am the Lord. |
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. | Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well. |
He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. | He alone is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I will not be greatly shaken. |
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. | Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life. |
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. | Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. |
He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. | Guarding the paths of justice, And He watches over the way of His godly ones. |
Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. | The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments is everlasting. |
The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. | The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, And His ears are toward their cry for help. |
I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. | I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will advise you with My eye upon you. |
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. | Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. |
Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. | You, Lord, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your mercy and Your truth will continually watch over me. |
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. | No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. |
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. | And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one of them according to their deeds. |
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. | So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. |
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. | Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. |
