Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up.We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.
The lips of fools bring them strife, and their mouths invite a beating.Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating.
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.
Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.
Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.
Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts.
Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God.
It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them.
Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.
A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart.People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart.
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.
Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.
If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.God detests the prayers of a person who ignores the law.
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry.The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.
When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.
Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field.
Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions.
So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.
But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.
Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children.
For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.”For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.”
The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.

But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to blot out their name from the earth.But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth.
