Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.
