| Knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. | For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. |
| My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. | My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever. |
| Now accept one who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions. | Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. |
| Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding. | Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. |
| Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty. | But consider the joy of those corrected by God! Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin. |

| Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” | After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” |
| Children’s children are the crown of old men; the glory of children is their parents. | Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children. |
| For we walk by faith, not by sight. | For we live by believing and not by seeing. |
| Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection. | Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. |
| Therefore, whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets. | Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. |
| For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. | The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. |
| Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? | The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? |
| Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong! | Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. |
| So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. | So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. |
| But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love. | Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. |
| The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. All those who do his work have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! | Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom. Praise him forever! |
