Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. | Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. |
The Lord makes poor and makes rich, he humbles and he also exalts. | Yahweh makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up. |
|
The wealthy man lords it over the poor, and the borrower becomes the slave of the lender. | The rich rule over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender. |
Speak out and pronounce righteous judgments; defend the rights of the wretched and the poor. | Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy. |
A man’s attraction is his kindness; it is far better to be poor than to be a liar. | That which makes a man to be desired is his kindness. A poor man is better than a liar. |
A wealthy man pays a ransom to save his life; a poor man never has to worry about such threats. | The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats. |
Grant justice to the weak and the orphan; defend the rights of the lowly and the poor. | Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. |
As sorrowful, and yet we are always rejoicing; as poor, and yet we make many rich; as having nothing, and yet we possess everything. | As sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing and yet possessing all things. |
In my anguish I cried out; the Lord heard my plea, and I was saved from all my troubles. | This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. |
Jesus replied, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” | Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” |
If I give away everything to feed the poor and hand over my body to be burned, but do not have love, I achieve nothing. | If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing. |
Because I delivered the poor who appealed for help and the orphan who had no one to protect him. The blessing of the wretched was given to me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. | Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had no one to help him, the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. |
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free. | The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed. |
Thus says the Lord of hosts: Render fair judgments, and show kindness and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor. Do not plot evil in your heart against one another. | Thus has Yahweh of Armies spoken, saying, ‘Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother. Don’t oppress the widow, the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.’ |
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to announce good news to the oppressed, to strengthen the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom to those held in captivity and release to those who have been imprisoned. | The Lord Yahweh’s Spirit is on me, because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound. |
He said to them in reply, “Anyone who has two coats must share with the person who has none, and whoever has food must do likewise.” | He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.” |
The brother who is in modest circumstances should take pride in being raised up. Likewise, the one who is rich should glory in being brought low, for he will disappear like a flower of the field. | Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. |
