A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit. | Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. |
Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. | So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. |
A talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter. | A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence. |
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God. | Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God. |
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. | But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. |
The hope of the righteous will be gladness, But the expectation of the wicked will perish. | The hopes of the godly result in happiness, but the expectations of the wicked come to nothing. |
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. | For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! |

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! | Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! |
A fool despises his father’s instruction, But he who receives correction is prudent. | Only a fool despises a parent’s discipline; whoever learns from correction is wise. |
He who walks with integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will become known. | People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed. |
