And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. | And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. |
He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. | By his own choice he gave us birth through the way of truth so that we may be a kind of firstfruits of all his creation. |

For he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. | For he guards the paths of justice and keeps watch over the way of his faithful ones. |
But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. My feet have closely followed his steps; I have kept to his way without turning aside. | And yet he is aware of everywhere I go; if he were to test me, I would emerge like pure gold. My footsteps have not strayed from the path he established; I have followed his way and never turned aside. |
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. | God’s love was revealed to us in this way: God sent his only-begotten Son into the world so that we might have life through him. |
This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. | This is how we can be certain that we abide in him and that he abides in us: he has given us a share in his Spirit. |
The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. | The Lord God made clothing for the man and woman out of animal skins and he clothed them. |
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance. | Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage. |
But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love. | But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those who trust in his kindness. |
The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. | A husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise a wife should fulfill her conjugal obligations to her husband. For a wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise, a husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. |
As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. | As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him. |
But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ | The tax collector, however, stood some distance away and would not even raise his eyes to heaven. Rather, he kept beating his breast as he said, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner.’ |
Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. | Alleluia. Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his precepts. |
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. | He is the reflection of God’s glory and the perfect expression of his very being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. Achieving purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high. |
No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. | No one should seek his own advantage in preference to that of his neighbor. |
There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. | Therefore, a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God, since those who enter into God’s rest also cease from their own labors as God did from his. |
The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. | Anyone who is victorious will be dressed like these in white robes, and I shall not blot his name from the book of life. Rather, I shall acknowledge it in the presence of my Father and his angels. |
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. | No one can have greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. |
Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. | Blessed are all those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. |
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. | And my God will fully supply all your needs out of the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. |
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? | Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? |
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. | I further pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know the hope to which he has called you, how rich and glorious is his inheritance in the saints. |
Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. | Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. |
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. | And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. And we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth. |
A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. | A good man produces good from the store of goodness in his heart, whereas an evil man produces evil from the store of evil within him. For the mouth speaks from the abundance of the heart. |
