How much more valuable a man is than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. | Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. |
So if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out there. If they say, ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For just as lightning comes from the east and is visible even in the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. | So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. |
The words of a wise man win favor, but a fool’s tongue is his undoing. | The words of a wise man's mouth win him favor, but the lips of a fool consume him. |
Blessed is the man whom God reproves. Therefore, do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. | Behold, blessed is the one whom God reproves; therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty. |
One day, as Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the Sabbath, his disciples began to pick some heads of grain as they walked along. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are your disciples doing what is forbidden on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the sacred bread that only the priests were permitted to eat, and he shared it with his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” | One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” |
Thus you could understand that the Lord, your God, was disciplining you, just like a father disciplines his son. | Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. |
A man’s attraction is his kindness; it is far better to be poor than to be a liar. | What is desired in a man is steadfast love, and a poor man is better than a liar. |
The prudent man perceives danger and seeks shelter, while the simple continue forward and pay the penalty. | The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it. |
Do not envy a violent man or choose to emulate any of his ways. For the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord whose friendship is bestowed only upon the upright. | Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways, for the devious person is an abomination to the Lord, but the upright are in his confidence. |
Do not let kindness and fidelity leave you; fasten them around your neck and inscribe them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will gain favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. | Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. |
He replied, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said: ‘That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two become one flesh’? And so they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” | He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” |
Behold, we are now going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death. Then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised to life. | See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day. |
Like a city that has been breached and made defenseless is the man devoid of self-control. | A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. |
With the Lord to protect me I am not afraid. What can mortals do to me? | The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? |
I, I alone, am the one who comforts you. Why then do you fear mortal men who must die, human beings who must perish like grass? | I, I am he who comforts you; who are you that you are afraid of man who dies, of the son of man who is made like grass. |
He will never be swayed; the righteous man will be remembered forever. | For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. |
The wealth of a rich man is his stronghold; he regards it as a high wall that cannot be scaled. | A rich man's wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination. |
Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A person will reap only what he sows. | Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. |
A wise man will heed commandments, but a babbling fool will come to grief. | The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. |
Just as water reflects one’s face, so does one human heart reflect another. | As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man. |
In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself. | In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. |
The name of the Lord is a tower of strength; the upright man runs to it and finds refuge. | The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe. |
One who gossips reveals secrets, but a trustworthy man keeps things hidden. | Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered. |
Wait quietly for the Lord and be patient until he comes. Do not fret over the man who prospers because of his evil schemes. | Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! |
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the company of scoffers. | Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers. |
