Behold, we are now going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death. Then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised to life. | Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again. |
The wicked man borrows but neglects to repay, whereas the righteous man is generous in giving. | The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. |
Just as water reflects one’s face, so does one human heart reflect another. | As in water face reflects face, So a man’s heart reveals the man. |
How much more valuable a man is than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. | Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. |
All day long the godless man continues to covet, whereas the righteous man gives unsparingly. | He covets greedily all day long, But the righteous gives and does not spare. |
One day, as Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the Sabbath, his disciples began to pick some heads of grain as they walked along. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are your disciples doing what is forbidden on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the sacred bread that only the priests were permitted to eat, and he shared it with his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” | Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” But He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?” And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” |
A man may plan his own course, but the Lord makes his steps secure. | A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. |
Blessed is the person who has found wisdom, the one who has gained understanding. | Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding. |
A fool is quick to show his anger, but a prudent man ignores an insult. | A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame. |
Blessed is the man whom God reproves. Therefore, do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. | Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty. |
Do not let kindness and fidelity leave you; fasten them around your neck and inscribe them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will gain favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. | Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. |
Therefore, we can say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?” | So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” |
The father of a good man will rejoice; he who begets a wise son will delight in him. | The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who begets a wise child will delight in him. |
The prudent man perceives danger and seeks shelter, while the simple continue forward and pay the penalty. | A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; The simple pass on and are punished. |
The words of a wise man win favor, but a fool’s tongue is his undoing. | The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up. |
The Lord makes a man’s steps secure when he approves of his conduct. | The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. |
Like a city that has been breached and made defenseless is the man devoid of self-control. | Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls. |
Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A person will reap only what he sows. | Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. |

Do not envy a violent man or choose to emulate any of his ways. For the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord whose friendship is bestowed only upon the upright. | Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways; For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, But His secret counsel is with the upright. |
God created mankind in his image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them. | So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. |
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the company of scoffers. | Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful. |
Wait quietly for the Lord and be patient until he comes. Do not fret over the man who prospers because of his evil schemes. | Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. |
The Lord God said, “Behold, man has become like one of us, for he has knowledge of that which is good and that which is evil. Now, we must prevent him from reaching out and taking the fruit of the tree of life lest he eat it and live forever.” The Lord God cast him out of the Garden of Eden; henceforth he was to labor tilling the soil from which he had come. | Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. |
