Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” | A sign was fastened above Jesus’ head, announcing the charge against him. It read: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” |
Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. | Sing to the Lord, for he has done wonderful things. Make known his praise around the world. |
No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. | There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. |
For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. | This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. |
And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. | And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. |
This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. | In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles. |
For whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. | For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. |
This also comes from the Lord of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom. | The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is a wonderful teacher, and he gives the farmer great wisdom. |
In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets. | Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. |
Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want. | “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” |
This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts. | This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. |
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. | And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. |
