- A joyful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. - For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
- A gentle tongue is a tree of life,
but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. - Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
- But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

- And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.
- For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
- And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.
